Wynns Michael Shiraz 1996
Since the first vineyards were planted in 1891 by Scottish pioneer John Riddoch, Wynns Coonawarra estate has become the Coonawarra region’s pre-eminent wine producer. Wynn’s produces two flagship wines for each vintage they consider worthy; John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon and Michael Shiraz. The first Michael was a one-off from the 1955 vintage, named after winemaker David Wynn’s young son. The 1996 vintage Michael Shiraz is great drinking now and delicious paired with pizza topped with aged pecorino, fresh tomato, artichoke, and pork sausage.
Wynns Michael Shiraz 1996 is deep red with a nose of strong mulberry, peppery Shiraz berry aromas enriched with coffee bean and American oak character. Rich with ripe and concentrated red berries, the palate also has mint and savoury spice within a firm, superbly balanced tannin structure.

Vintage 1996 - Dense purple-red; the bouquet is typically super-concentrated, oozing ripe black cherry fruit and heaps of oak. The palate is at once profound, yet smooth, almost glossy, with black cherry fruit and cedar/vanilla oak. The tannins are ample but round and soft.

Vintage 1996 - There is certainly the richness of fruit to carry this powerfully constructed and concentrated shiraz. Musky, spicy ripe flavours of minty, briary blue and sour black berries are matched with smoky mocha oak, creating a plush, but firm and very fine-grained palate of great intensity and balance.
