Penfolds Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz 2017
Nourished in the ancient, rich, red Marananga soils under a warm and dry Barossa Valley sun, this contemporary Shiraz is framed by a mix of old and new French and American oaks. The result is a wine of sweet spice – always unmistakably Penfolds. Its a wine with an exceptional drinking window from 2024 to 2032.
Very deep, dense, brooding red/purple colour, with a smoky char-oak and black fruit bouquet incorporating blackstrap licorice and sooty/earthy and blackberry notes. Cocoa powder and coal dust. The wine is very full-bodied but not as big a Bin 150 as usual. A more elegant style except that the tannins are quite chewy and robust, and the length is quite persistent. 97 points, Huon Hooke
