Australia Just Pipped By France In London Comp

FRANCE topped the trophy list with 19, but Australia came next with 18 in the 2008 International Wine Challenge in London, the world's largest wine competition.
This year attracted 9000 wine entries from 40 countries. More than 400 judges spent two weeks assessing the entries and awarding 267 gold medals and 114 trophies, 12 of which went to Portugal, 10 to Italy and eight to Spain.The Aussie star wine was the Majella 2005 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, which won the trophies for the best Coonawarra wine, best South Australian red wine, best Australian red wine and the best cabernet sauvignon. The trophy for the best international semillon went to a Clare Valley wine, the Tim Adams 2007 Semillon.Yalumba's Pewsey Vale 2002 The Contours Eden Valley Riesling took three trophies for the best Australian white, best South Australian white and best Eden Valley wine and the Yalumba 2007 The Virgilius Eden Valley Viognier won best international viognier.Other Australian winners included the Kilikanoon 2005 Oracle Shiraz (international shiraz) and the Clairault 2007 Sauvignon Blanc (Australian sauvignon blanc).
