ONE of the longest-standing Hunter Valley wine traditions has come to an end with Tyrrell's Vineyards opening its doors for Sunday trading for the first time - legally - in 46 years.
Tyrrell's cellar door on Broke Road in Pokolbin will now be open seven days a week, with winery tours taking place everyday at 1.30pm.Managing director Bruce Tyrrell said the tradition of closing on Sundays was not about religion."In the 1960s, my [late] father Murray Tyrrell bent the rules a little bit by opening on a Sunday, only to be caught out by the local licensing sergeant - who also happened to be a great friend," Mr Tyrrell said."It was plainly obvious that if we opened on Sunday we would be raided so we shut the doors and kept them shut even when we got a proper licence a few years later."Tyrrell's is celebrating 150 years of winemaking this year. Special events include Hunter Semillon & Seafood on April 19 and the Hunter Valley 's biggest-ever barbecue, Two Reds Meet, on May 31.
