GONE are the days when wine was the only alcoholic beverage being matched to the dinner plate.
Beers for every occasion are now also on the menu, with specialty brews that complement meals. Two are Bluebottle and Firefly, developed by Fusion Brewing to be enjoyed with seafood and spicy food respectively. Co-owner of Fusion Brewing Scott Douglas said there were foods such as Asian cuisine that were better suited to beer."A few years ago it wasn't very common and it was all about the wine, but beers can now be as special and premium as wines for a full dining experience," he said. "Having different beers to match food has opened the doors for BYO beers because people now look to match their meal with their beer and it's something restaurants need to cater for."Bluebottle and Firefly are available from selected Newcastle bottle shops and restaurants, such as Newcastle's Bali Corner, pictured, for about $6 a bottle.
