THE Hunter has again confirmed its place as the top spot for a tipple after dominating recent state wine awards.
Seventeen of the top 40 wines named in the 2008 NSW Wine Awards were from the Hunter. The region had more winners than any other region, the closest rivals being Canberra and the Riverina with six apiece. The 800 entries were judged by 23 industry peers and chaired by wine expert, Lester Jesberg, who said the top wines demonstrated the diversity of NSW wine in style, variety and region. The Hunter's De Iuliis Wines, McGuigan, Mistletoe, Pokolbin Estate and Tyrrells were among the winners with multiple top 40 listings.Other winners included Audrey Wilkinson Vineyard's 2006 museum reserve semillon, Broke Fordwich's Krinklewood Biodynamic Vineyard's 2004 chardonnay, and McLeish Estate's 2008 semillon-sauvignon blanc. Tempus Two, Thomas Wines and Warraroong Estate also made the list. Tess Campbell
