Pill Could Fight Fat

A CHEMICAL that occurs naturally in red wine and fruit skins could be made into a pill that lets people eat fatty food without gaining weight.

Israeli scientists claim that if polyphenols are taken with a meal, some of the fats eaten are discarded as waste.

Ten people were given a different dark turkey meal: turkey meat and water; turkey meat with a tablespoon of concentrated wine added after cooking, and a glass of wine; turkey meat soaked in polyphenols before cooking, and a glass of wine.

Participants then had their malondialdehyde (MDA), a byproduct of fat digestion that increases the risk of heart disease, measured.

While MDA levels increased almost fivefold in those who ate the meal without polyphenols, those who ate the second meal had a 75percent reduction in absorption of MDA, and in those who ate the third meal "the elevation of plasma MDA was completely prevented", researchers said.
