Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is known for its intense zesty, tangy and grassy flavours that are characteristic of this light-bodied white wine. Its pungent flavours have made it a favourite to match with a range of cuisine, and Sauvignon Blanc is also popularly blended with Semillon to enhance richness and sometimes to soften the aggressive tones of many varieties.

Its native origins were the wilds of Southern France, and Sauvignon Blanc's eventual progression into one of the world's most popular white wines was born out of wineries in the Loire Valley. The Sauvignon Blanc grape is also a key component to some of the world's finest dessert wines, and you can commonly find both sweet and dry examples of Sauvignon Blanc.

Grown in the United States, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, cooler climates have in the past produced golden standard Sauvignon Blanc. New Zealand in particular has been noted as one of the world's leading producers of high quality Sauvignon Blanc. The flavours and characters of good Sauvignon Blanc are unlike any of the other popular varieties of white wine.

Depending on the vineyard and winemaker producing the wine, Sauvignon Blanc is said to exhibit everything from peachy and melon flavours to oak, butter, spices and smoky flavours on top of the zesty, grassy and peppery flavours described previously. It is naturally high in acidity and is considered to be widely aggressive in its flavour.

Like most whites, Sauvignon Blanc is not normally aged for long after its vintage, and most bottles should be consumed within a few years. There are always exceptions, and the very best Sauvignon Blanc may be aged for over 10 years, but this is rare and not normally necessary. The light-bodied complexity of Sauvignon Blanc makes it a good companion for many foods.

Dry Sav Blanc matches well with seafood, rich cheeses and peppery or garlic dishes that would clash with most other forms of dry white wine. Enjoy a refreshing Sauvignon Blanc throughout the warmer months or whenever you are craving a strikingly sweet or crisp white wine.
