Riesling

Riesling originates from the Rhine region in Germany, and this white wine is one of Germany's most important contributions to the global wine scene. Being one of the most unique, popular and versatile wines, Riesling is also a favourite among wine drinkers and it is known to age longer than most other popular whites on the market.

Germany isn't the only place to produce top quality Riesling, though, and Australia, New Zealand, France and the United States have all produced world-class Rieslings in the past. The Clare and Eden Valleys in South Australia and various areas throughout Tasmania have shown to produce top-quality Riesling in Australia.

Similar to Chardonnay, Riesling can display different characteristics depending on regions, wine maker and other contributing factors. Typically, it is known to contain high acidity and low alcohol that translates into a freshness that other whites fail to replicate. Riesling typically produces intense flavours that range from dry to sweet and rich, and this dictates the tastes you will derive from each bottle of Riesling.

Floral notes, apples, pears, apricots, earthy tones and honey flavours are all commonly noted in different varieties of Riesling. The best quality Riesling will age well, and it proves to be the exception to the rule with ageing white wine as some bottles are aged into the decades. However, most Rieslings are intended to be consumed within a few years of vintage.

Because of its diverse array of flavours, each bottle of Riesling should be assessed before matching it to food. The high acidity levels go particularly well with salads, light lunches, seafood and some Asian cuisine. Dry Rieslings work well as an aperitif, and with a little experimentation, you will soon see why so many wine lovers regard Riesling so highly.

With a good grasp on the intensity and unique characteristics of Riesling, you can now discover some other popular white wines in the form of Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc. Alternatively, check our section on Chardonnay or discover the full variety of wines at wine.com.au.
