Pinot Gris

Pinot Gris is a close relative to the Pinot Noir grape variety, and the two varieties are difficult to tell apart except for the distinct colour differences that eventually become apparent in the Pinot Gris. This colour is often described as grey, but in reality the colours can stretch to pinks and browns. In Italy, Pinot Gris is known as Pinot Grigio, and the two grapes are one and the same.

However, you will sometimes find a distinction between the Pinot Gris and Pinot Grigio that we eventually consume as wine, and this comes down to regions, winemakers and intended style of the wine. Pinot Grigio is often described as dry, light and straightforward while Pinot Gris is full, sweet and rich. Much like Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris can produce exceptional quality wine that is suitable for a variety of occasions.

Often Pinot Gris/Grigio is attributed to floral undertones, citrus fruits such as lemon, apples, pears, honey flavours and various spices. Some Pinot Gris examples have a smoky flavour, and this is one wine that is beneficial to have tasting notes or better yet a taste test before consumption and purchase.

Much like other Pinots, Pinot Gris is best consumed a short time after vintage and does not typically keep well for longer than two years. Although France and Italy produce the golden standard Pinot Gris/Grigio, the United States, Germany and Australia have put a considerable effort into capitalising on the recent popularity of this wine. Some experts have predicted it will eventually reach the same level of popularity as other well-worn whites such as Rieslings and Chardonnays.

This is another wine that is best matched to food on an entirely individual basis. The more neutral Pinot Gris varieties will pair will with a broad spectrum of meals, while richer varieties will go well with seafood, white meats and meals that demand a wine with more complexity. Watch out for this wine as it may catch you off guard with its many excellent flavours and characteristics.
