Margaret River
The Margaret River wine region offers a completely unique experience for those venturing into this south-western corner of Western Australia. About a three-hour drive from Perth, the stunning beaches, scenic landscape and pleasant climate almost all year round are reasons enough to draw people to this area.
With the addition of monthly events, festivals and celebrations, gourmet food and world class wine, you can see why many see Margaret River is a very special place. While the Margaret River is a younger wine region than some others in the country, it has developed into a commanding position on the Australian wine scene.
History
While the first significant vineyards sprung up a relatively short 40 years ago, the region now features over 90 wineries and many more vineyards throughout its 120km expanse. While the area was settled in the 1850s, it wasn't until the late '60s that the region was earmarked as potential hotspot for producing wine.
Pioneering wine producers in the region include Moss Wood, Cullen, Woodlands and Cape Mentelle, and the region produces around 20 percent of Australia's premium wines. The impressive amount of wine comes largely from boutique wine makers, and this only adds to the appeal of the area for those visiting the region or enjoying its wine.
Margaret River Wine - Best In The Region
The Margaret River wine region built its reputation on a backbone of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. A score of awards and accolades were gifted to the region for its creative styles and distinct tastes, Marget River has since become a household name in Australia for fine wine.
Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and various other lesser known grape varieties are also highly prized in the region, and most wine experts believe that Margaret River will continue to improve on its already lofty standards as the region becomes more refined with age. Much to the delight of connoisseurs around the world, there appears to be a lot more to come from this exceptional Australian wine region.
