Barossa Valley
The Barossa Valley in South Australia is one of the most famous wine growing regions in the country. Described as a gourmet lover's paradise, the Barossa Valley has attracted worldwide acclaim from travellers and wine lovers everywhere, and it has been featured in guides and influential lists as one of the top wine regions in the world.
There are festivals and events staged in the Barossa around the year, but you don't need to wait for a celebration for an excuse to try some Barossa Valley wine. The climate is moderately warm in the lower lying areas, but at higher altitudes and through to the Eden Valley, the area can be quite cool. With many years of culture and tradition behind it, the Barossa Valley is unlike any other region in the world.
History
The Barossa Valley's history dates back to the early 1800s with the discovery of the Barossa Ranges. Like other areas in South Australia, it was first settled by Lutherans around 1840 and the German heritage is apparent in the architecture and cultural traditions of the area. Wine soon became a part of life in the Barossa Valley.
The earliest vineyards in the Barossa began soon after settlement, and wine from the Barossa was being exported to England by the 1890s. The reputation that made the Barossa Valley was built, and this is continued today with wine makers now numbering above 80, and over 50 cellar doors for those on the wine trail to enjoy.
Barossa Valley Wine - Best In The Region
With over 160 years of tradition behind it, the Barossa Valley has every element needed to produce world class wines. A case in point, the Penfolds Grange and Henschke's Hill of Grace earned their status as legendary Shiraz on the international wine scene. The region has proven to produce outstanding Shiraz, and with some of the oldest working Shiraz vines in the world, it's no wonder that this is the wine of choice from the region.
However, there's many more exemplary varieties to enjoy, and the region is also famous for its Rieslings, Chardonnays, Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots and much, much more. With so much high quality wine, stunning scenery and an easy trek from Adelaide, the Barossa Valley is a must for many wine lovers.
