History
European settlers founded McLaren Vale in the 1830s, and vines were planted soon after in 1838. Present day Seaview and Hardy wineries were in operation in 1850, and they pioneered wine making in the region with rich, dark Burgundy style wines. Several more vineyards were established in the region, but the turbulent years in the early 1900s impacted upon the wine community of McLaren Vale.
It wasn't until the 1950s that the region began to recover its reputation for a region capable of producing outstanding quality wine, and new wineries, tourism and the region in general once again began to thrive. Now, over 65 wineries adorn the area, and McLaren Vale has forged a staunch position both locally and internationally for its award-winning produce.

Like most Australian wine regions, McLaren Vale produces a Shiraz, and in this case, it also the region's most well-known drop. No two Shiraz varieties are alike from McLaren Vale, but there many fine examples to try and the wine makers in the region are not shy about proclaiming their diverse and delicious examples of this favourite variety.
